Meet Brendon Sowerby
Founder and Director of Next Level Construct
I grew up in Feilding a small town just outside of Palmerston North in the Manawatu. I started playing rugby as a 5 year old and my passion for it grew and developed over the years. In 2003 I had the opportunity to travel to the UK and play a season of rugby, which was then followed by another season in the USA. While I was away overseas I had the opportunity to work as a laborer for 2 different construction teams. Dealing with all facets of building within such a short period of time gave me a great interest in construction. It was working in the USA that I decided upon returning to New Zealand I would take up a building apprenticeship.
I returned home and begun working as an apprentice builder however I had caught the travel bug so this was shortly followed by another trip to the UK for a working holiday. My return to London was some of the best times of my life, I made some great friends, met my now wife, worked hard and travelled whenever I could. 3 of the biggest highlights from my travels has got to be seeing the gorillas in Congo, shark dive in South Africa and ANZAC day in Turkey. Travel has continued to be a passion of mine and Karen's (my wife) and we try to get away once a year somewhere new and exciting overseas.
While I was in London, a good friend and I started a loft conversion company. With the tight confines of inner city living the loft conversion was the most popular way of extending their existing homes. I learnt a lot from this experience; it taught me skills which have been invaluable, like how to work to a tight budget and think creatively to maximise clients budgets. It truly opened my eyes to the world of owning your own business and I knew that it was how I wanted to work.
One of my standout jobs in London was for an Arabian Sheik; we did a double story side extension and loft conversion on a £4 million mansion. Every thing was gold plated, marble clad or oak. This meant gold plated light fittings, a custom made oak staircase and balustrades which were constructed by hand on site. The biggest challenge on this job was the full height marble tiling throughout the bathrooms and entry which had been sourced direct from Italy - they were so heavy we had to bulk up the wall framing and linings before it could be laid.
In late 2009 we had decided it was time to return home to start the next chapter of our lives. With my wife being Australian and myself from Feilding, we both decided to compromise on location, we settled in Auckland and haven’t looked back since.
2010 was then the year that Next Level Construct became a reality; my dreams of delivering quality building services to New Zealand had finally became a reality. Not only has Next Level grown over the years, but so has my family I now have 3 children Indie 4 and Kaise 2 and Lena who is 6 months old.
I’ve always been a big believer of providing a great service and quality product. Over the years I have nurtured a collaborative and people-focused culture because I strongly believe that communication is the key to an efficient and effective build process and job well done.
